I have a very good friend that has a problem
with the words like "gay", Homo, and faggot
being used as an adjective to describe usually
a bad thing. Ever since she mentioned this in
her blog I have been consciously listening
to people and their remarks. It is kinda scary
how often these phrases are used even by my
own children. I see this down the same lines as
using the Lords name in vain. I am not
overly religious but it still bothers me
when some one says God Damn it or Jesus
Christ as an expression of negativity. I can
see now why those words can hurt.
My son mocks people when they say thing like this. Say
the same statement but insert something else in
its place and it sound absurd.
Where do some of these responses come from. Like the one it "hurts
like a bitch", how does a bitch hurt or "that's so gay"
hmmm. It is amazing how words get used out of
context and you don't even know you are doing it.
I have begun the re pharseology for my kids just
like when they were little and we had to teach them
that saying shut up or potty mouth was not acceptable.
I have learned a lot about human rights and how unfair
our country is. My friend is one of the few lucky ones
who are legally married. But a lot of people in same sex
relationships get the short end of the stick when it comes
to rights. It is beyond understanding why. I am pretty
sure who I am voting for now after seeing Hillary on
Ellen. She is the best chance of equality we have as
long as she sticks to her guns. Unfortunately one of
the reason she may not get elected is because of were
she stands on this issue.
So for now I will try to change my little part of the
world in respects to not using words that hurt and
go forth from there.
